Backstretch Bursary Announcement!

The Selection Committee for the Backstretch Bursary had an extremely difficult decision to make as many outstanding applications were received. Thank you to all applicants for their dedication and commitment to the backstretch community.
On behalf of Madison Leonard, the HBPA of Manitoba is pleased to announce Abigail Doig as the recipient of the 2026 Madison Leonard Backstretch Women’s Bursary. We would like to extend our sincere congratulations to Abigail.
Abigail brings extensive horse experience and successfully completed the 2026 Racehorse Groom Training Program, where she pursued her goal of becoming a racehorse groom. She is currently employed by trainer Wendy Anderson in the backstretch.
Just a few qualities that stood out is her ample time volunteering with Tails of Freedom Rescue. In addition, Abigail has gained valuable experience by shadowing veterinarians in their practices, and already experienced both pre-operative and post-operative care for animals. Abigail has her sights set on veterinarian school with a focus on large animal and equine medicine.
Congratulations Abigail!

More Than a Meal – Building Our Backstretch Community

The HBPA of Manitoba holds meal gatherings monthly. These gatherings are about much more than great food—they’re an opportunity to slow down, spend time together, and strengthen the friendships that make our racing community so special. They remind us that, regardless of our roles as trainers, grooms, jockeys, owners, or office staff, we’re all part of the same team, working toward the same goal and sharing the same passion for our horses.
In the fast-paced world of horse racing, it’s easy to get caught up in the daily demands. These events are a chance to reconnect, celebrate our diverse cultures, and remember that kindness, respect, and community are what make the backstretch a great place to be. Upcoming evenings are below!
