The backstretch has been a busy and productive place in recent weeks. Participants in the Racehorse Groom Training Program have now completed their training and transitioned into working in barns across the backstretch. It has been a very successful year for the program, with many participants excelling in both the classroom and hands-on training environments, demonstrating strong work ethic and enthusiasm for the racing industry.
In addition, the backstretch community garden has been planted and is thriving. Backstretch workers will soon be able to enjoy the fruits of their labour, with a variety of fresh vegetables including tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant, and several types of peppers expected to be ready for harvest later this summer. We have had a few elves out beautifying our backstretch!
HBPA OF MANITOBA is happy to announce the details surrounding the Groom of the Year Award.
The Groom of the Year Award recognizes outstanding individuals who excel in their role as a racehorse groom — working tirelessly behind the scenes on the backstretch at Assiniboia Downs. This award is designed to celebrate the dedication, professionalism, horsemanship, and hard work that racehorse grooms contribute each and every day to the racing industry. HBPA of Manitoba has committed to presenting the Groom of the Year Award annually (until further notice) each spring during the Awards Gala. The top three finalists will be awarded $500 each and invited to attend the gala, where the overall winner will be officially announced and presented with an additional $1000. Trainers are asked to nominate their grooms who they feel most deserve this award. Details are available in the HBPA of Manitoba office. Good luck to all!
