It’s starting to feel like training season is truly underway at Assiniboia Downs. While the weather is still trying to make up its mind, there’s no denying the momentum building on the backstretch. The horse population continues to grow, and the energy around the barns is picking up every day.
We’re pleased to share that the main track is now officially open. Despite challenging conditions and unpredictable spring weather, the track crew worked tirelessly to get things ready. Their dedication has not gone unnoticed and is greatly appreciated by everyone preparing for the season ahead.
Welcome Back Dinner – April 18
The Welcome Back Dinner is set for April 18, and we’re looking forward to seeing everyone come together to kick off the season. It’s a great opportunity to reconnect, enjoy a good meal, and welcome both familiar faces and newcomers to the backstretch.
Groom Training Program Growing Strong
The Groom Training Program is in full swing and continues to gain momentum. We currently have 15 students who have successfully completed the classroom portion and are now gaining valuable hands-on experience in the barns.
An additional 10 participants are expected to join in the coming weeks. It’s encouraging to see such a strong group of hardworking and dedicated individuals entering the horse racing industry.
Backstretch Women’s Bursary
A bursary for young women working on the Assiniboia Downs backstretch is now available. This is a fantastic opportunity to support education and career development. A big thank you to Madison Leonard for this wonderful gift.

EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT
The HBPA of Manitoba are thrilled to announce a brand-new initiative — the HBPA of Manitoba Groom of the Year Award.
- Trainers will be able to nominate a groom or grooms who they feel is exceptional in their role, who continues to prove themselves, and is dedicated to the horseracing industry.
- Three finalists will be chosen by a selection committee.
- Finalists will be invited to next year’s Awards Gala, where the winner will be announced and significant prize will be awarded!
